The UP Data Science Society announced the second Philippine Junior Data Science Challenge on May 6, 2022. It was open to all undergraduate students in the Philippines, and registration was free, with cash prizes of up to 18,000 pesos. The competition was brought to you by the UP Data Science Society and GCash, in cooperation with Coding Dojo and Info Alchemy, with special thanks to Altabay Solutions. The organization partners were UP Aggregates, UPLB Mathematical Sciences Society, UP Physics Association, USC Mathematics Society, Mathematical Society of Mapua, and Junior Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers - DLSL. The primer was published at tinyurl.com/PJDSC2022Primer.
Format
PJDSC 2022 was a month-long event with talks, workshops, and an exploratory data analysis (EDA) competition. Teams of two to four members with programming, analytics, data visualization, and presentation skills registered at tinyurl.com/PJDSC2022, and individuals could sign up to be grouped with others. Registration opened on May 9, 2022 and was scheduled to close on May 13, then extended to 11:59 PM on Sunday, May 15, 2022.
The Top 30 teams were notified by email on May 18, 2022, and the datasets were sent to them that night. Workshops and breakout room discussions followed on May 21, and EDA presentations were due on May 28, 2022. The Top 5 were first scheduled to be announced on June 3 and were posted on June 17, 2022. The finals were livestreamed on June 18, 2022, where the five teams defended their analyses in front of a panel of judges from GCash.
Teams worked with precinct-level results of the 2022 presidential and 2016 vice presidential elections together with 2021 poverty statistics from the Philippine Statistics Authority. The tasks were to analyze the datasets and extract their primary attributes, to explain the factors behind trends in the data, to build a data visualization that a general audience could read, and to support conclusions with descriptive statistics. Entries were judged on how actionable the results were rather than on their complexity.
