On July 13, 2024, from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, UP Data Science Society held “Guide to LangChain,” a mentorship workshop on using the LangChain framework to build applications on top of large language models (LLMs). The session was streamed live on the society’s Facebook page, so anyone could follow along.

The announcement on July 11, 2024 framed it as a walk through how LangChain works and how it fits into data science work, for people who want to add LLMs to what they already do with data. The society’s recap on August 8, 2024 described it as a hands-on workshop: LangChain was presented as a Python interface to LLMs such as OpenAI’s GPT models and Mistral, and Talip set it up on Google Colab, shared tips and useful functions and methods, and stressed precise prompt engineering to get the outputs you want. Her Colab notebook was linked from the recap.

Speaker

Louise Gabrielle Talip is a senior BS Computer Science student at the University of the Philippines Los Baños and a Full Stack Software and AI Engineer at Offshorly. She works in Python, C/C#, Java, JavaScript, and R, across web development, data science, AI, and generative AI and LLMs, and has competed in programming competitions locally and internationally.

The workshop was one of the society’s mentorship workshops in 2024. Later sessions in the same series covered data cleaning in MS Excel and in Pandas and Scikit-learn.
